Description: This collar brass device is U.S. Army issue Signal Corps officer brass and intended for wear on the field uniform. It was issued from the period 1895 through the First World War. The Kemper command staff adopted the brass for wear on their uniform as a means of distinguishing the Corps command element. Kemper Military School was constituted as an artillery battery consisting of two breech loading cannon commanded by a signal element. The battery commander and his staff wore signal collar brass such as this from 1898 until the end of WW I.
