KEMPER HALL OF FAME

Mr. Richard B Roberts

“The mastery of language is the mark of a truly educated man.”

Richard B Roberts was born in Kansas City and raised in Southern Missouri where he attended schools in and around Cabool, Missouri. He was graduated Summa Cum Laude from Southwest Missouri State University and Magna Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin. Roberts joined the Kemper faculty in 1944 and, except for a brief period when he accepted a position with the University of Illinois to assist in establishing a Portuguese  language department, taught at Kemper all his life.

His highly disciplined classroom and demanding attention to detail were legendary at Kemper. Roberts was deeply respected by his faculty peers and admired by cadets for his knowledge of language. Roberts could speak and write no fewer than seven foreign languages.

Some cadets disagreed over whose eyeglasses were more thick, Roberts or Frank Arnold. However, no one ever had the nerve to ask either for an opinion.

Sadly missed by cadets and fellow faculty of Kemper Military School.
